New mural marks the 25th anniversary of Barry Hospital

Following the positive feedback received about the Rose McDonald wall mural in the Paediatric Phlebotomy area in Barry Hospital, the team at Cardiff & Vale Health charity knew just who to contact to create another piece of art for the room next door, in the new Adult Phlebotomy area.

Rose, a Fine Art Graduate from Cardiff Metropolitan University, strives to provide beauty and happiness through her paintings for others to enjoy and appreciate. She has always had a passion for art and health and considers her art to be her own therapy. Rose jumped at the chance to create another mural in Barry Hospital, this time with the intention of providing a room with no view, with its own beautiful outlook!

The brief for this art project was to create a window looking out into a peaceful, bright and colourful view.  After discussion the decision was made to focus on a local landmark, the Viaduct at Porthkerry Park in Barry.

Rose said: “To celebrate Barry Hospital’s 25th anniversary, I created a large-scale window mural of Porthkerry Park, Barry.

“The Adult Phlebotomy area has no windows, so this colourful landscape will make such a difference to the room for both the staff, and patients. I thoroughly enjoyed working on this mural and feel honoured to create such a memorable piece of art for the hospital.  I would like to thank Cardiff & Vale Health Charity’s Staff Lottery for funding this project.”

Sue Dickson-Davies, Health Charity lead for the project said: “Last year we celebrated the 25th anniversary of Barry Hospital.  Due to the pandemic and long term restrictions in place, most of the planned projects and celebrations were cancelled.  When we knew the new Adult Phlebotomy area was being refurbished with monies from a Staff Lottery bid, and with the help of our Capital Estates and Facilities colleagues, we thought another wall mural marking the 25 year milestone would be a very welcome addition to this project – the plane with the banner was a suggestion from Rose, and I think it adds a special something to the finished mural!”

Ceri Hooper on behalf of the Phlebotomy Team said: “It’s a lovely mural showing the viaduct and countryside through an open window creating a welcome distraction for our patients.  They are all very pleased with this welcome addition to what was a dark space, and we cannot wait to start using the room.”

Peter Welsh, Senior Hospital General Manager for Barry Hospital said: “The mural is really great and adds a lot of value to the new area.  I’d like to thank Rose for her hard work and creativity in finishing this project prior to the opening of the new Adult Phlebotomy area.”

Cardiff & Vale Health Charity team hopes that staff and patients using this new room will really appreciate this very unique window to the world.
