Newport is gearing up to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with a range of events, activities and projects that will benefit the whole city.
Among the events will be the lighting of the Jubilee beacon, as well as a picnic at Beechwood Park in Newport.
Queen’s Jubilee Beacon
2 June, 8pm – 10pm
Queen Elizabeth II Playing Fields, Edward German Crescent, Ringland, Newport NP19 9ND
The Jubilee Beacon is one of the official events of the Platinum Jubilee. Thousands of beacons will be lit by communities, charities and groups throughout the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK Overseas Territories.
The event will begin at 8pm with a welcome address from the Leader of Newport City Council. There will be performances from Swn Celtaidd (Gwent Music Celtic group), Gwent brass ensemble and collaboration choir Cwm Rhondda. ‘Diu Regnare’, a piece of music specially composed as a tribute to Her Majesty will be played and a bugler will also perform.
At 9.45pm the Beacon will be lit by the Lord Lieutenant for Gwent, Brigadier Robert Aitken CBE, followed by a further performance by The City of Newport Male Choir, Adams Chorale Choir, Newport Cathedral Choir and Gwent Music Youth Choir.
The event will close with the national anthems.
Newport’s Big Jubilee Lunch
5 June, 1pm-6pm
Beechwood Park, Newport NP19 8AJ
Newport will be hosting a Big Jubilee Lunch on Sunday 5 June on the top field of Beechwood Park.
Bring a blanket and a picnic and celebrate the Platinum Jubilee with friends, family and the wider community.
The Platinum Jubilee Pageant will be shown on a big screen and there will be family-friendly entertainment throughout the afternoon including the Blue Belles, B-Boys, Roo’d, Sunday Grannies, and a balloon modelling artist.
The café at Beechwood will also be open for light refreshments.
