Nurse from University Hospital Wales wins prestigious national award

Bowel Cancer UK has announced Caroline Trezise, Colorectal Clinical Nurse Specialist, from University Hospital Wales, as a winner of the tenth annual Gary Logue Colorectal Nurse Cancer Awards. 

Caroline is the recipient of the award for a nurse nominated by their colleagues. In the nomination, she was described as an exemplary nurse, who has excelled in her position in the past two years.  

One colleague said: “Caroline has been a rock for myself and the service as a whole.  

“Like many nurses that work so hard for their patients, she deserves the recognition and praise for the exceptional person she is.” 

The judges said they were moved by the outstanding support and compassion Caroline provided to patients, as well as the innovative ideas she has brought to the hospital.  

Some of Caroline’s stand-out achievements included streamlining the referral process for bowel cancer patients and setting up the All-Wales Peritoneal Malignancy Service. This aims to tackle inequalities she spotted in patients with peritoneal disease accessing treatment.  

Caroline said: “I am delighted to receive this prestigious award from Bowel Cancer UK for recognising the role of the Clinical Nurse Specialist in patient care, but even more delighted that as a team we have been able to bring this vitally important treatment and surgery to the people of Wales.” 

“It is still early days for our All-Wales Peritoneal Malignancy Service,” Caroline added. “But I look forward to building on our successes and developing the service further.” 

The awards were set up in memory of Gary Logue, who worked as a nurse for the charity and died in 2014, in honour of the tireless dedication he showed during his career. This year marked the awards tenth anniversary.  

The awards were presented by the Chief Executive of Bowel Cancer UK, Genevieve Edwards, at the National Colorectal Cancer Nurses Network (NCCNN) Annual Education Event on Thursday 19 September 2024. As part of the award, Caroline received a bursary towards her professional development.

“Caroline is a remarkable nurse and I’m so impressed by the pioneering and caring work she has done in the last year. Our heartfelt congratulations to her for the exemplary care she gives to people with bowel cancer. 

“Nurses like Caroline make such a difference to patients and their families through supporting them through a very difficult time in their lives. And for that we thank them wholeheartedly.”
