Airsoft guns are popular replicas of real firearms that shoot lightweight plastic or rubber pellets. They have gained popularity as a recreational activity and in competitive sports due to their realism and low-cost ammunition.

But what exactly do airsoft guns shoot, are they legal, and where can you buy the ammo?

Types of Ammunition Used In Airsoft Guns

Airsoft guns can shoot different types of ammunition depending on the type and power of the gun. The most common types are pellets, BBs (ball bullets), and rubber bullets.

    Pellets

Pellets are small round balls made from plastic or biodegradable materials such as cornstarch. They come in various weights and sizes, with the most common being 6mm. Pellets are used in higher-end airsoft guns due to their precision and accuracy.

    BBs

BBs, also known as ball bullets, are spherical projectiles made from plastic or metal weighing between 0.12-0.48 grams. They come in various colours, such as white, black, and biodegradable green.

BBs are the most popular and affordable type of ammunition used in airsoft guns. They are suitable for both low-end and high-end guns, making them a favourite among beginners and experienced players.

    Rubber Bullets

Rubber bullets, also known as non-lethal training rounds, are made from rubber or plastic materials. They are typically larger than pellets or BBs and are used for training and simulation purposes.

Rubber bullets are commonly used in law enforcement and military training scenarios, providing a realistic experience without the risk of injury.

Which Airsoft Ammo Is Best For Gameplay?

The type of ammunition used in airsoft guns ultimately depends on personal preference and the type of gun being used. However, there are some general guidelines to consider when choosing ammo for gameplay.

    • Pellets: Due to their precision and accuracy, pellets are best suited for long-range shooting and more advanced players who want a realistic shooting experience.
    • BBs: As the most popular and affordable option, BBs are suitable for all types of gameplay and can be used in both low-end and high-end guns. They are also the most widely available.
    • Rubber Bullets: Used mainly for training purposes, rubber bullets are not typically recommended for gameplay as they have a lower velocity and may cause less impact when hitting targets.

Different arenas and clubs may also have specific rules and regulations regarding the type of ammunition allowed in gameplay, so it is always best to check with them before purchasing ammo.

    Legalities of Airsoft Gun Ammunition

In most countries, airsoft guns themselves are legal to own and use. However, the legality of the ammunition varies depending on the country or state. In some places, owning and using airsoft gun ammunition may require a special license or permit.

Travelling with an airsoft gun is also subject to different regulations, so it is essential to research and understand the laws of your destination before packing any ammunition.

Where to Buy Airsoft Gun Ammunition

Airsoft gun ammunition can be purchased from various sources, such as online retailers, local sporting goods stores, and specialised airsoft shops. It is important to buy from reputable sources that provide high-quality ammunition suitable for your type of airsoft gun.

It is also recommended to check the legality of airsoft gun ammunition in your area before making a purchase. There may be age restrictions on certain types of ammunition, and there definitely will be if you’re buying an airsoft gun.
