Poundland is putting the finishing touches to a new store in Newport, South Wales, that alongside other changes to its stores in the city, bring shoppers even more choice and value, helping household budgets go further.
The store at Unit 7-9 Friars Walk shopping centre, Newport NP20 1EA, opens at 9am on Saturday 4 February.
The 7,241 sq ft store is in the former Mothercare and New Look stores and will employ 18 full and part-time colleagues, including 13 existing colleagues and five new recruits.
Larger than the store it replaces in the Kingsway shopping centre, which closed earlier this month, it has been designed for maximum convenience, including trolleys and supermarket-style checkouts familiar in grocery stores. Poundland’s small city centre store in Commercial Street will remain open until March.
Poundland Friars Walk will offer everyday essentials such as groceries, drinks and snacks that shoppers love, as well as revamped health and beauty, entertainment, stationery and craft ranges to allow customers to do more of their shopping in a single trip.
It will join the growing number of Poundland stores, now across half of its estate, to sell chilled and frozen food, from desserts and ice-cream to ready meals and pies and from cooked meats to frozen vegetables. One of the big advantages of frozen food when household budgets are under pressure is that they enable customers to save money and reduce waste.
Poundland Friars Walk will also offer a section dedicated to Pep clothing for the whole family and Pep home items.
Poundland director of retail, Darren Kay, said: “We’ve worked hard to create a store that shows off Poundland at its best and one that the people of Newport can be proud of.
“Our new Friars Walk store keeps us right in the heart of the city and will be a cracking example of the breadth of what we can offer in a really convenient location. Just like all our stores, it will offer amazing value to customers looking to beat the economic squeeze.”
