RCT Council will begin a significant repair scheme to Maes-y-Felin footbridge in Pontyclun, starting from Tuesday (June 1) – which requires the necessary closure of the structure and a nearby footpath to safely carry out the works.
The footbridge, which is located on the footpath south east of Glan-yr-Afon, has been monitored closely by the Council after its poor condition became apparent during an inspection. The upcoming scheme will include remedial works – including replacement of the bridge bearings and removing all corrosion. The structure will then be fully-repainted to complete the scheme.
The Council has appointed Centregreat UK as the contractor responsible for carrying out the works, which will begin from Tuesday, June 1. The bridge will be closed from midnight on this date, lasting approximately 15 weeks.
The section of footpath between Glan-yr-Afon and the bridge will also close from midnight (June 1) for the scheme. A diversion route will be signposted from Glan-yr-Afon to the footpath on the opposite side of the bridge.
Councillor Andrew Morgan, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member with responsibility for Highways and Transportation, said: “This upcoming scheme in Pontyclun is included within the Council’s £25.025m Highways and Transportation Capital Programme for 2021/22 – which has allocated £4.99m to repair and improve highways structures, along with £750,000 for parks structures, during the current financial year.
“This funding allocation is on top of the significant ongoing work to secure additional capital funding from Welsh Government for Storm Dennis infrastructure repairs, which remains a priority across the County Borough.
“The Maes-y-Felin footbridge has been monitored by the Council due to its poor condition, and these works will repair and future-proof the structure for the benefit of the community. Thanks to local residents in advance for their cooperation with the necessary closure of the bridge to enable these works.”
