Tonnes of MIGHTY recycling has been collected from across Rhondda Cynon Taf as residents once again prove they have got MIGHTY recycling powers!
The Council is congratulating its residents on its fantastic recycling figures for December 2021!
Residents across Rhondda Cynon Taf are some of the ‘mightiest’ in Wales and have had a very green Christmas, with more and more residents joining in the fight against waste!
The amazing news is that overall black bag/wheelie bin waste has dropped by over 50 tonnes compared to last year – which means that our residents are thinking before they buy and reducing their overall non-recyclable waste!
In addition to this RCT residents recycled over 2765 tonnes of waste over the two-week festive period – which includes over 600 tonnes of food waste being recycled and turned in to green energy to power homes.
Recycling is just one way that residents can help to reduce their carbon footprint in the fight against Climate Change – as a Council we are committed to doing all that we can to reduce our overall emissions and are working to help residents as much as we can. There is no excuse to not ‘THINK CLIMATE RCT’ every small change we all make, can make a BIG difference.
As part of the Council’s ongoing commitment to climate change and recycling, it recently introduced a change to the way it collects green waste recycling – The introduction of new sustainable and reusable green sacks will see the Council reduce its overall plastic usage by around 3Million Clear bags annually.
Green waste collections have now resumed across RCT and are being collected fortnightly on the same day as your black bag/wheelie bin waste. Residents are reminded that they need to be registered for their TWO FREE sacks and to use this service – more information is available at www.rctcbc.gov.uk/BrandNewBag. Spring weekly collections will resume on Monday 28th March and will follow your normal recycling collection day.
The MIGHTY Streetcare team have worked throughout the festive period and been out in all-weather collecting the enormous amount of recycling residents have been putting out.
The mighty refuse and recycling collection crews in Rhondda Cynon Taf have been showing off their superpowers throughout the pandemic and there was no let-up over the festive period as they continued their fight against waste – despite the added challenges that Covid-19 brings to us all.
The Council is asking all its residents to keep up this MIGHTY work into the New Year and beyond to help Rhondda Cynon Taf recycle as much as it can. Recycling in Rhondda Cynon Taf is so easy it’s one resolution you’re guaranteed to stick to!
Councillor Ann Crimmings, Cabinet Member for Environment, Leisure and Heritage Services, said:
“In 2015 Rhondda Cynon Taf Council was crowned the fastest improving Council in Wales for its recycling efforts by the Welsh Government. This is something that all residents can all be proud of – but we can still do more by just recycling one extra item, we can hit the 70% target set for 2024/25.
“In the run up to Christmas and over the festive period we have been calling on residents to sign up for food waste recycling and the response has been great. You can sign up at any time to receive your free food waste caddy and start turning all that leftover and inedible food into energy which can be used to power homes.
“The Council has made a number of changes to improve the services that are available in recent years and residents are continuing to support the changes and these results are testament to that – Well done RCT and a huge thank you to the Streetcare team who have worked over the festive period, in all-weather to collect it all!”
