Rhondda Cynon Taf school crowned ‘Best Breakfast Club’ in Wales

Rhigos Primary School

A Rhondda Cynon Taf primary school is celebrating having been crowned the Best Breakfast Club in Wales.

Staff and learners at Rhigos Primary School are delighted with the news and have been invited to attend the Kellogg’s Breakfast Club Awards in London on June 21 to collect their special award and the £1,000 prize money for the school’s Breakfast Club.

Nominations for the 2022 Kellogg’s Breakfast Club Awards, which the company has been supporting since 1998, were open to all Breakfast Clubs across the UK.

Rhigos Primary School has been recognised and rewarded for all the hard work and dedication staff, families and the young learners put into making this Breakfast Club so successful at the start of each school day.

In partnership with the Council’s Catering Services, all primary schools across Rhondda Cynon Taf run Breakfast Clubs, providing learners with a healthy start to the day before they head into the classroom.  Not formal childcare, Breakfast Clubs are an extra-curricular activity aimed at supporting school attendance and learning. The menu traditionally consists of toast or cereals and fruit juice and also provides for those learners with allergies or special dietary requirements.

Gaynor Davies, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Director of Education and Inclusion Services, said: “The Council provides Breakfast Clubs in all of its primary schools in order to ensure that every child in a maintained primary school has access to a free healthy breakfast at the start of the school day. This ensures that children can arrive in school early to access a nutritious breakfast and opportunities to interact and socialise with their peers prior to the start of the school day.

“Access to a good breakfast ensures that children are ready to learn and are able to focus on the learning opportunities provided by their teachers and support staff.

“There are so many benefits of attending school Breakfast Clubs and I congratulate everyone associated with Rhigos Primary School and for their contribution to making their Breakfast Club the best in Wales.”

The benefits of school Breakfast Clubs can include improved behaviour, providing the opportunity for supervised play and social time, improves punctuality and provides a useful resource for parents or carers who might need to start work early.

Janine Mundy, Headteacher at Rhigos Primary School said: “We are delighted to have won this award of Best Breakfast Club in Wales. It is a true testament to all the hard work and dedication that goes into running this successful initiative each weekday during term time.

“I would also like to thank the parents and carers for ensuring the attendance of our young learners, as well as the staff who supervise the sessions.”
