Schoolgirl Amelia to hike Pen y Fan in memory of her dad

Amelia Millett

A schoolgirl has set herself the challenge on walking up Pen y Fan for the Wales Air Ambulance in memory of her dad.

Amelia Millett, from Pontypool, lost her dad Adam following a car accident, when she was aged four. In memory of him, she plans on hiking the highest peak in South Wales, which is situated in the Brecon Beacons National Park.

This is Amelia’s first fundraiser for the Charity, and she has already smashed her fundraising target of £250. The 12-year-old has so far raised an incredible £460 for the all-Wales Charity.

Wales Air Ambulance is a consultant-led service, taking hospital-standard treatments to the patient and if required, transferring them directly to the most appropriate hospital for their illness or injury.

It is delivered via a unique Third Sector and Public Sector partnership. The Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service (EMRTS) supplies highly skilled NHS consultants and critical care practitioners who work on board the charity’s vehicles.

Amelia’s proud mother Tiffany, who is excited to see how much she can raise, said: “As a family we are immensely proud of Amelia she had been through so much losing her dad at the age of four. The family has always raised money for the Wales Air Ambulance, but Amelia wants to do this for herself and for a 12-year-old to have such a kind and caring heart is a blessing.

“The Wales Air Ambulance was called out to her dad, and they honestly were amazing and tried everything to keep him here. There aren’t enough words to describe the help they give to people, and they should definitely get more recognition for their work.”

The Wales Air Ambulance Charity needs to raise £11.2 million every year to keep the helicopters in the air and its rapid response vehicles on the road.

Amelia, who attends Abersychan Comprehensive School, and has two sisters and a little brother, will put on her walking shoes to hike Pen y Fan on Sunday 4 August.

Tiffany added: “Having a 12-year-old deciding she wants to walk Pen-Y-Fan in memory of her dad is something I find very special.”

Abi Pearce, Regional Fundraising Manger for the Wales Air Ambulance, said: “A huge thank you to Amelia, who sounds like a very kind-hearted young girl. Despite losing her dad at such a young age, Amelia has taken it upon herself to fundraise for the Charity that tried to save her dad’s life, which is incredible. We wish Amelia well with her fundraiser and thank everyone who has supported her by donating to this cause. She has already raised a fantastic £460 for the Wales Air Ambulance, which is amazing.”
