RSPCA Cymru is appealing for information after a badly-injured skewbald stallion was found on Cardiff’s Rover Way.

The horse is some 15-hands high and was found with wounds to both flanks which had been inappropriately treated with iodine spray.

Sadly, the stallion, thought to be aged around 15, was found with ulcers in both eyes, lacerations to his body and was lame on his left hind. He was found to be roaming the street, lethargic and clearly in great pain and discomfort, on 23 July.

Poor attempts at DIY treatment had been given to the horse, and the lack of proper veterinary attention would have been causing him unnecessary and prolonged pain. He is currently recovering in the care of the RSPCA while investigations continue.

Anyone with information about how the stallion came to be left in such a state has been urged to contact the RSPCA’s inspectorate appeal line.

RSPCA inspector Simon Evans said: “This poor horse was found in a really bad way on Cardiff’s Rover Way – with serious injuries.

“His eyes have nasty ulcers, and there are lacerations to his body – but thankfully he is now recovering in RSPCA care.

“Some poor DIY attempts had been made to treat this horse, including the use of iodine spray to wounds on the flanks but it is simply not good enough. This horse desperately needed to see a vet – but instead he has been given makeshift treatment and left to roam the streets

“His injuries are bad and he clearly needed urgent veterinary care – and that is something the owner seems to have not ensured; which is clearly a dereliction of their duty to this animal.
