Snow Queen Review 2024: A Magical Christmas Experience in Cardiff

Cardiff Christmas Festival

The enchanting Spiegeltent returns to Cardiff for 2024, nestled in the festive surroundings of Sophia Gardens as part of the city’s Christmas Festival. This mirrored tent sets the perfect stage for a truly magical production of The Snow Queen, inspired by the classic Hans Christian Andersen tale, written by Richard Tunley with music and lyrics by Pete Mitchell. From the moment you step into the twinkling wonderland surrounding the tent, you know you’re in for a Christmas treat.

A Spectacular Venue

The Spiegeltent is a unique circular venue, ensuring that every seat offers a great view of the action. Its intimate setting and warm, festive décor make it an unforgettable place to enjoy a Christmas show. With fairy lights and Christmas trees adorning the entrance, the atmosphere is nothing short of enchanting.

A Story to Warm (and Chill) Your Heart

The tale of The Snow Queen may be familiar to many as the inspiration behind Disney’s Frozen, but this adaptation weaves a uniquely Welsh twist into the narrative. You’ll follow Gerda on her heroic quest to save her best friend Kai from the icy grasp of the Snow Queen. Along the way, you’ll meet unforgettable characters like Bryn, the 7ft Welsh polar bear, a talking ice-skating daffodil, and two mischievous hand-puppet penguins who steal the show with their comedic antics.

Original Music and Stellar Performances

The show features an entirely original score, with catchy songs that both children and adults will love. The cast of six performers delivers stunning vocal performances, with standout roles from Codi Mullane as Gerda, James Sillman as Kai, and Melanie Stevens as the Snow Queen. Each actor, many from the Welsh College of Music and Drama, brings energy and charm to their characters, making the story easy to follow and thoroughly engaging.

Festive Family Fun

With a running time of approximately 70 minutes and no interval, the show is perfectly paced for families with younger children. Our 10- and 11-year-olds were enthralled from start to finish, and the appearance of Santa Claus brought a joyful surprise to round off the experience.

Accessibility and Amenities

The Spiegeltent is fully heated and offers thoughtful amenities, including a buggy park, wheelchair access, and a fully licensed bar with snacks and drinks that you can enjoy during the performance. The surrounding festival site adds to the festive cheer with food stalls and plenty of opportunities to soak in the Christmas spirit.
