Swansea Council announces huge support for families to make the most of school holidays

Families are being supported to make the most of the school summer holidays with the biggest-ever programme of free and subsidised activities in Swansea.

The free bus offer is also back every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday for the whole of the break so many can be reached without cost.

Some schools are taking part in the Welsh Government funded Food and Fun programme where pupils attend for fun activities and are provided with a healthy breakfast or lunch.

The council is supporting other projects with grants to community food initiatives and food banks and also with transport for the Everyone Deserves projects that helps to feed many young people each summer.

Council partners are running breakfast clubs and some ward members are also supporting breakfast and lunch clubs in their wards.

Swansea Council Leader Rob Stewart said: “We know that the summer holidays is a fun time for families but it can also be a worry for some due to the cost.

“Departments right across the council have come together to ensure there are scores of free and low-cost activities for families until the schools return and the popular free bus initiative is back.

“We are also supporting food programmes so where families are struggling then they know they can access meals for their children.”

Cabinet member for Community Support, Haley Gwilliam said: “There are literally hundreds of free and low cost events and activities this summer organised by services across the council and I’d encouraging families to check them out.

“Some, like the free National Play Day at the Waterfront Museum on Wednesday August 2, are expected to attract hundreds of families while others are small scale but promise to be equally fun.

“There will be something most days that should appeal to children and young people whatever their interest.”

Cabinet member for Well-being, Alyson Pugh added: “We are very conscious that with the cost-of-living crisis some families are struggling which is why throughout the summer we are supporting food poverty initiatives so that no child goes hungry.

“We are involved in some wonderful partnerships and are supporting the work of charities and volunteers in all that they do.”
