An eighty-two-year-old man has started a seven-year jail term after he was convicted of sexually abusing a child.
David Henry Williams was sentenced on Monday (April 1), after a jury found him guilty of two counts of inciting a boy under 13 to engage in sexual activity, and one count of sexually assaulting a boy under 13.
Swansea Crown Court heard Williams was arrested in July last year after the young victim made graphic disclosures to his mother as they played at his grandparents’ home.
The child was able to recount details of the abuse, which occurred on a number of occasions at the defendant’s home.
The pensioner, from Killay, Swansea, denied the allegations against him but a jury convicted him of all charges.
Detective Constable Amanda Pugh, officer in the case, said: “David Williams’ actions have had a profound effect on his young victim and the victim’s family.
“The young boy in this case should have been able to trust Williams – instead Williams preyed on his innocence and vulnerability to satisfy his own depraved interests.
“I cannot praise the victim and his family enough for having the strength and courage to speak out and support this prosecution; they have acted with so much dignity and have ensured that Williams is now in custody and unable to abuse anyone else.
“I hope today’s sentencing gives the victim and his family the closure they deserve in order to begin rebuilding their lives, and I hope it sends out a strong message to anyone who may be suffering in silence that they can come forward and report abuse.
“For me this result can only encourage victims of these types of sexual offences, whether adults or children, to have the courage to come forward and speak to specialist officers and report crimes of this nature.”
