Tesco grant helps launch free choir for South Wales youth

The Mountain and Marsh Ministry Area hits the high notes with Tesco grant for youth choir

Children and young people in South Wales will get the chance to participate in a brand-new choir thanks to the Cardiff shoppers and a little help from Tesco.

The Mountain and Marsh Ministry Area received £500 from Tesco’s Stronger Starts scheme to create this new choir for the youth of South Wales.

The grant will allow children and young people aged 10 to 16 years old to apply and audition for the new musical collective for free.

The grant means there will be no need for subscription fees for any of the children, young people or their parents, making it more accessible for the community to participate.

The ministry area will be taking applications up to 30 September and then will hold auditions on 1 October.

To be in the chance of joining the choir, you simply need to submit a few sentences explaining why you would like to join the choir.

Ross Maidment, Ministry Area Leader and Chair of Trustees, said: “We cannot thank the residents of Cardiff enough for supporting us with their tokens when they are shopping at Tesco.

“To be able to provide such an opportunity for free is something that isn’t as easy as it once used to be, and Tesco have gone above and beyond in making sure we can make this new choir a success.

“We are one of the few remaining choirs left in the area to offer free membership to our choir members and we couldn’t do that without the help and support of Tesco and our communities.”

Those who join the new choir will not only receive the chance to sing and be a part of a group with no extra charge, they will also receive a choir-branded hoodie and the chance to earn up to £90 for participating in the choir.

Choir members who have been there for at least one year will also receive the opportunity to partake in the RSCM’s Voice for Life Scheme and earn a coloured lapel badge and certificate based on the level achieved, with further opportunities to progress for the right candidate.

Claire de Silva, Head of Community at Tesco, said: “It’s heartwarming to be able to support such a lovely project. The choir is already looking like it will be a big hit among the community, and I wish them nothing but the best in the future. Good luck to all applicants.”
