Vandals recently damaged five trees planted in one of Newport’s beautiful ornamental parks.
Councillor Yvonne Forsey, Newport City Council’s cabinet member for climate change and biodiversity, said: “I utterly condemn such mindless and pointless wanton vandalism.
“All were young trees but three were planted almost three years ago and the other two were small apple trees from the orchard that were only planted last winter.
“Our Green Flag parks give a great deal of pleasure to so many people in the city and the trees are an intrinsic and precious part of these wonderful green spaces.
“I would urge anyone with information about this crime, or any similar incidents, to contact Gwent Police.”
The other three damaged trees were prunus, liquidambar, and ginkgo.
