Exciting plans for a new pedestrian and cycle bridge over the river Taff have been unveiled, part of the wider regeneration of Grangetown’s Channel View estate.
The Council is embarking on a £80 million redevelopment of the Channel View estate in Grangetown to replace existing homes suffering from subsidence and structural damage and create a greener, more sustainable, more attractive neighbourhood for the existing community.
As part of the masterplan approved by Planning in December 2021, the proposed new footbridge will provide an active travel link for pedestrians and cyclists between the Channel View estate, the Marl and the area around Jim Driscoll Way on the west bank of the river to Hamadryad Park on the east bank.
The bridge would provide an important connection for communities on both sides of the river, linking to schools, parks, leisure facilities and open spaces as well as the wider network of routes for walking and cycling, linking to the Cardiff Bay Trail, Ely Trail and Taff Trail
This has been a key aspiration of the Channel View Regeneration project to improve the connectivity of the estate for the existing community and provide a more suitable sustainable active travel route.
Concept designs have now been completed for this part of the project and consultation is now underway to hear the views of local people and interested parties to help shape the final set of plans to be submitted for planning approval next year.
A public consultation event is being held at CF11 Fitness (formerly Channel View Leisure Centre) on Wednesday 23rd November, 11.30am – 7.30pm where interested parties will have the opportunity to find out more about the scheme, speak to council officers about the plans and give their opinion on the bridge.
A smaller drop-in session for anyone unable to make the main consultation event will also be held at Grangetown Hub on Thursday 17 November, 12 – 5pm.
Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities, Cllr Lynda Thorne, said: “As well as delivering good quality, sustainable new homes for existing residents of the Channel View estate and building more, much-needed homes for the city, a key part of our Channel View vision is about providing better connectivity for people in the area, improving the local environment and delivering high quality community spaces.
“A new bridge across the Taff is an important part of these plans, that we have been speaking about to residents in Channel View and people and businesses in wider area for a number of years now. We’re at the early stages of the process with the bridge and have recently appointed a team to begin designing it so this consultation is an opportunity for people to give us their views, which will be fed into that process.
“We’d love to see as many people as possible at the consultation event at CF11 Fitness later this month and encourage anyone interested in the plans to have their say by completing the short online consultation.”
