Who is a Software Developer and What Do They Do?

Who and what is a software developer, exactly? Software developers are the talented and creative individuals behind the apps, games and computer programs we use every day.

The app you use to do your banking and the computer programs you use to edit photos or play games were all created by software developers.

What Does a Developer of Software Do?

Some software developers focus on specific apps or programs. Others develop the frameworks that help power other programs. For this reason, there are two types of developers: systems software and applications software.

  • Systems software developers focus on developing operating systems-level software or network distribution software. Along with general software programs, these professionals may also create software for a variety of industries, including industrial, medical, communications, business, aerospace, military, science and more.
  • Applications software developers focus primarily on creating mobile applications for consumers. Along with developing the app, they may also modify programs as needed and monitor performance.

Some developers work for a custom software development firm or software development company, while others freelance.

What Typical Responsibilities Do Software Developers Have?

A software developer may have a variety of responsibilities, including:

  • Overseeing software programming
  • Laying out the software design
  • Testing the software throughout the development process
  • Creating diagrams and models to demonstrate the end goal
  • Mapping out future upgrades

Because software developers are typically more experienced and advanced in their careers than programmers, their responsibilities are a mix of management and execution.

In many cases, developers aren’t involved in the day-to-day programming of an app or software program. Rather, they focus on using their knowledge and expertise to review coding or find room for improvement in existing applications.

A developer’s job is never really done, even after the software has been completed and launched. After an app or software has been released, developers will continue to monitor for bugs or other issues users may find.

When bugs or issues are found, developers will work with small teams of programmers to resolve the problem as quickly as possible.

Additionally, developers work on updates for software and applications. These updates may change the design or even the functionality of the program.

Which Abilities Are Crucial for Software Developers?

All developers, whether they’re a senior or junior software developer, need to have several skills to excel in their careers. These include:

  • DevOps: A group of practices that blend software development and information technology skills. DevOps is all about managing resources so that a functional software program can be delivered quickly and on-budget.
  • Linux: An operating system that’s open-source and has a number of tools that are useful for programmers, including grep, awk piping and sed.
  • Software engineering: The complex process of building software. Software engineering skills are crucial for software developers, as it requires programming and analytical skills.
  • Communication: Software developers are leaders. They manage teams of programmers, so they must have excellent communication skills. Developers must be able to clearly communicate the goals and expectations for their teams.
  • Programming: Of course, developers also need programming skills. They must understand various languages and their functions in order to oversee the development process. Generally, developers should know whatever programming language is standard in the industry, as well as Python, HTML, Java, C# and SQL.

What Steps Should You Take to Become a Software Developer?

Software development can be a lucrative, challenging and rewarding career, but how do you get started?

Here are the steps to take:

First, Try Your Hand at Programming

Software developers must have programming knowledge, so try your hand at it to see if it’s something you enjoy.

There are many programming languages, but you may consider starting with the following:

  • Java
  • Python
  • C/C++
  • Scala

These four languages are always in demand, and they can give you a foundation that will help you learn other languages.

Pursue a Degree or Coding Bootcamp

Most developers have a bachelor’s degree or higher, but some get started in their careers after enrolling in a coding bootcamp.

Look for a course for a software developer, or find a program that will give you the skills you need to get started in this career.

Practice Makes Perfect

Regardless of whether you pursue a degree or go the self-taught route, it’s essential to start practicing now. Practicing is the best way to work with programming languages and understand the development process.

While you’re practicing, take the time to build a portfolio. Your portfolio can help you land a job as a programmer and then a software developer.

Concluding Remarks

Software developers are experienced tech professionals who help build some of the most important mobile apps and software programs we use today. If you’re considering a career as a developer, follow the steps above to get started on your journey to success.
