Young musicians shine at regional concert

Pembrokeshire Orchestra and Windband

Musically talent young people from Pembrokeshire enjoyed a six county orchestra course at Aberystwyth University this month.

The event culminated in a special concert at the Brangwyn Hall, Swansea, where young people aged 12 to 19 from Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Swansea, Powys, Neath Port Talbot delighted their audience.

The course was funded by the National Music Service Wales ensemble recovery fund and was free of charge for orchestra and wind band pupils ensuring that all young people could take part regardless of finance.

The orchestra performed under the baton of the world renowned conductor Grant Llewellyn who is originally from Tenby.

Wind band pupils also benefited from a half day rehearsal conducted by Geraint Evans, retired head of Ceredigion Music Service.

The repertoire include Prismatic Light, Fanfare for the Common Man, Finlandia and Hamilton among many others.

The Trumpet Concerto was performed by Carys Wood who is a member of Pembrokeshire Music Service county ensembles and is now taught by Philippe Schartz BBC National Orchestra Wales principle trumpet.

Head of Pembrokeshire Music Service Philippa Roberts said: “The success of the concert is a result of the hard work from the pupils and dedication of the tutors who supported the pupils over the four days course. Thank you to National Music Service Wales for supporting this valuable opportunity.”
